xxxHOLiC: A Midsummer Night's Dream

Un anime originale in ogni suo singolo componente, xxxHOLiC porta un po' di freschezza nel genere surreale/horror. Estremamente divertente.


Animazione - 9 / 10

Dove sono finiti gli anime brutti a vedersi?? Ultimamente ho notato un miglioramento generale nel campo dell'animazione veramente notevole. Questo anime in particolare è inoltre un film, il che significa che il budget è senz'altro molto maggiore in proporzione alla lunghezza. Di fatto xxxHOLiC è veramente bello per la fluidità dell'animazione, la bellezza dei fondali e l'integrazione ormai quasi perfetta della grafica 3D con quella 2D. L'animazione contribuisce molto a fondere l'atmosfera surreale/horror con elementi tipici delle commedie, uno dei tratti caratteristici di questo anime, riuscendo a far divertire ma anche a mettere lo spettatore un po' a disagio.

Notevole il modo in cui sono disegnati i personaggi, che hanno braccia e gambe lunghissime e sottili; le proporzioni molto alterate contribuiscono al generale effetto "ma che diamine sto guardando??" e i movimenti dei personaggi sono regolati in modo da accentuarle.


Audio - 7.5 / 10

Non ho notato la colonna sonora piu' che tanto mentre guardavo l'anime. E' probabilmente una di quelle colonne sonor eche funzionano bene pero', visto che deve essersi fusa perfettamente col resto dell'anime. Peccato che non ci siano brani memorabili da ascoltare per ricordare lo spettacolo :( Come in quasi tutti gli anime recenti, anche in xxxHOLiC gli effetti sonori sono perfetti.


Storia - 8 / 10

La storia è molto strana e potrebbe richiedere una seconda visione; anche in questo campo gli autori hanno lavorato di originalità fondendo idee nuove con cliché del genere e riuscendo in qualche modo a creare qualcosa di strano e interessante. Lo spettacolo è relativamente corto e non voglio dare alcun dettaglio sulla trama, ma aspettatevi qualcosa di pesantemente incasinato :p

L'ambientazione passa dalla tipica strada della modernissima Tokyo ad una casa in stile tradizionale giapponese per finire all'interno di una magione molto strana. Il passaggio per gradi dalla realtà all'irrealtà è gestito bene e lo spettatore si sente un po' portato per mano, un po' trascinato attraverso situazioni sempre più strane fino al finale, dove il surreale inghiotte qualsiasi spazio fisso, qualsiasi proporzione.

Da notare che xxxHOLiC è nel proprio nucleo una commedia; non va giudicato sullo stesso livello di altri spettacoli appartenenti allo stesso genere come Cossette no Shouzou o Kousetsu Hyaku Monogatari.


Personaggi - 8 / 10

In xxxHOLiC troviamo alcuni personaggi tipici del genere: la strega che sembra sapere sempre tutto, decisamente un gradino sopra tutti gli altri; lo sfigato cronico che (forse proprio perché è sfigato) riesce a vedere gli spiriti; la sua controparte, da lui osteggiata, che invece non può vedere gli spiriti ma li respinge con la propria presenza; ed infine la tipica mascotte idiota in stile giapponese (nessuno saprà mai da dove è venuta l'idea per quel coso nero, forse da un coniglio). Tutti restano fedeli allo stereotipo che incarnano, con qualche deviazione molto piacevole. La cosa che li rende notevoli e che mi ha fatto alzare il voto da 7 a 8 è che mai, in nessun momento, si nota che sono stereotipi. Ci ho dovuto ripensare dopo aver guardato il film, durante la visione non ho mai notato nulla di poco originale - infatti il bello di questo anime è che è diverso da qualsiasi altra cosa abbia mai visto. Evidentemente i personaggi funzionano estremamente bene, quale che sia la ragione.

Forse un pò basso, ma raramente arrivo a dare 9 a qualcosa a meno che non sia del tutto eccezionale. xxxHOLiC ha moltissimi meriti e lo consiglio caldamente; non passerà alla storia come un'opera d'arte di alto livello ma è una delle cose piu' divertenti che abbia mai visto.

Overview

Easy to like and original, xxxHOLiC brings a breath of fresh air to the horror genre. The queerness of the characters, especially the protagonist, turns it at times in a very funny and enjoyable comedy.


Animation - 9 / 10

xxxHOLiC is yet another high-budget anime movie with a fluid and pleasant animation. 3D and 2D are integrated together almost seamlessly. What xxxHOLiC's animation does best is support both the comedy and the horror parts of the anime.

CLAMP's character design is as strange as ever: thin, tall figures with long arms and legs contribute to the general "WTF???" effect and their movements are such that their queerness are accentuated.


Sound - 7.5 / 10

I didn't really notice the soundtrack as I was watching the anime so it probably did its job: support everything without stealing the viewer's attention from what really matters. Too bad there aren't any memorable songs one can listen to.

Like in most recent anime, xxxHOLiC's sound effects are excellent.


Story - 8 / 10

The story is strange and may require a rewatch. The authors went for originality and hit the target, melting new ideas and old cliches together. You can expect something seriously f*cked up.

The setting varies from the typical Tokyo street to a traditional Japanese house and end up in a very strange western-style residence. The gradual switch from common to absurd has been managed quite well and the viewer should feel led by the hand through increasingly strange scenes to end up in a surreal ending where no space seems fixed and the sense of proportion is just a toy the direction plays with.

xxxHOLiC has a comedic heart, so don't expect something like Cossette no Shouzou or Kousetsu Hyaku Monogatari. They don't really belong to the same category.


Characters - 8 / 10

Some typical characters of the horror/supernatural genre play important parts in xxxHOLiC. The all-knowing witch, the guy cursed with the ability to see spirits, the other guy who can't see them but repels them just by being there; finally, the typical idiotic Japanese mascotte, which almost nobody could identify as a rabbit without having undergone some serious anime indoctrination. All of them remain mostly faithful to the cliche they embody but still deviate from it now and then in ways I found interesting and amusing. Indeed, as I was watching the anime I never found it unoriginal, quite the contrary; so, whatever the reason, the characters do work very well.

Far from being a must-see or even memorable, xxxHOLiC nevertheless has its merits and can be an hour or so of solid fun, so I recommend it.
