Juuni Kokuki - I Dodici Regni

In generale

Voto complessivo - 8,5/10

Juuni Kokuki è decisamente un must-see.

Overview

Juuni Kokuki is a fantasy anime distinguished by a great story and unforgettable characters. It's based on a series of novels that apparently aren't available outside of Japan. 45 episodes long, it's a collection of stories that share most of the main characters and the setting; unfortunately, it was cut because of budget problems and it's absolutely evident that at least 4-5 stories, maybe more, are missing. However those that have been animated are complete and very well done.

Animation - 7,5/10

Juuni Kokuki's animation isn't technically excellent, but it manages to express all the beauty of the fantasy world where most of the story takes places. Even if the few scenes set in the real world feel kind of uninteresting, the powerful beauty of the nature and the architecture — inspired by ancient China — of the Twelve Kingdoms is gripping. The vividness of every single setting — the wilderness, rich cities, a beautiful palace, a town torn apart by war — make all the colors, all the moods of that medieval world jump right out of the screen. Many static scenes are so beautiful they'll probably leave a mark in the memory of any viewer.

Few 3D scenes have been used, but their quality is quite low and they're usually perceived as ugly. Fortunately, they are simply too rare to have any bearing on the overall animation quality.

Character design is good; an anime with a numerous and very varied cast needs to express the personality of the characters graphically as well as using good dubbers and good dialog. Juuni Kokuki succeeds in setting each character apart from the others, even large crowds usually have a lot of variety. The clothing, also inspired by the ancient Chinese culture, is very creative and by varying quite a lot between different countries it makes everything feel just a little more realistic.

Action scenes aren't always at the same level of other anime of the time, but in this particular anime action is hardly the focus. On the other hand, gripping action scenes do exist and they are many, although due to the length of the anime they are far from each other.

Sound - 7/10

Juuni Kokuki's OST is simply excellent and very suited to work as a soundtrack; unfortunately, the producers didn't tap all the potential it has: often the switch from a track to another is too evident, some tracks are overused and the variations of the beautiful OP — which is the theme of the Twelve Kingdoms and perfectly represents them musically — are almost always used when the viewer is focusing on the dialog rather than while the camera sweeps over the landscape. More carefulness would have been cheap and would have made a big difference.

The sound effects are, at their best, barely adequate. Usually they're very low quality. Certain anachronisms, like associating a "swissshh!" to jumps, aren't acceptable in a 2003 anime.

The dubbers are all very good and convincing; the dubber of one character in particular, Rakushun, wins the prize here.

Story - 9/10

From the first story, which leads us from the real world to the Twelve Kingdoms, to the last one Juuni Kokuki is always interesting and gripping, with numerous dramatic turns of events that keep the viewer's interest high and great attention to important themes like the value of life, morality and one's right place in the world - the kind of themes one usually doesn't find in fantasy anime.

Juuni Kokuki's story has a lot to offer to both the fans of the fantasy genre and fans of anime, but it's a great choice for occasional viewers as well. It's a high-speed run through a detailed and well fleshed-out parallel world; a consistent part of the Twelve Kingdoms is revealed in all its beauty and even if a big part of it is missing it doesn't really matter; what we have here can only be judged excellent by any reasonable standard.

Characters - 10/10

Most of Juuni Kokuki's characters, not just the main ones, reveal a careful and intelligent study of their personality. Like in any other anime, not all of them undergo a significant evolution, but for the first time I can say that most of them do, indeed, evolve in interesting ways. Whoever considers character development important will find Juuni Kokuki an excellent anime. The viewer will hardly be able to predict the changes in someone's personality, even what's just behind the corner stays out of sight until the last moment.

in Juuni Kokuki we can recognize the kind of character construction typical of good books. Everyone's very much alive and some of them will probably be felt as distant friends by the time the anime ends.

Personal judgement - 10/10

Juuni Kokuki is certainly one of my favourite anime. The experience has been wonderful.

Overall - 8,5/10

This anime is a must-see. While belonging to a niche genre — that I don't even like, to be honest — it manages to be fit for any viewer; even if its animation and sound are only slightly above average, all the rest makes it a work of art.

Mulholland Drive

Mulholland Drive

This movie is a masterpiece where David Lynch captures the viewer in a strange dream and then drops him in a painful grotesque reality.

In the beginning the movie follows a woman with dark hair who, after a car accident in Hollywood, completely loses her memory and ends up finding shelter in a house just left by an elderly couple. When their young nephew, a blond woman, who just arrived from Canada to become an actress, enters the house she finds the dark-haired woman and decides to try help her recover her memory.

The movie goes on following the two women, who keep searching for anything that might help the dark-haired woman, but it often leaves them and shows short, self-contained stories that seem to have nothing to do with anything else. The viewer will see a scene showing an incompetent killer who steals a black book, the only element connecting the whole thing to the main story being the fact that he and his victim talk about a car accident. Equally absurd and seemingly almost completely disconnected, a longer scene shows a director who finds his wife cheating on him and later is threatened until he employs an actress who could be the twin of the blond woman. The actress playing the part is the same, but we know beyond any reasonable doubt that it isn't the same character.

Although those deviations from the main story are confusing, if enjoyable by themselves, the main story does seem to proceed toward some kind of ending. Eventually the two women fall in love, have sexual intercourse and, in the most surreal scene in the whole movie, go to a theater and watch a very strange play. Then the story literally blows up.

Suddenly, none of the actors are playing the same part they were playing 2 minutes earlier. None of the characters are the same as before. Parts of a character's personality or history become parts of another, someone's fortune or misfortune becomes someone else's. Scenes seen before recombine in unpredictable ways and suddenly are much more meaningful; many objects that were completely out of place — e.g. the black book the killer stole — change place or possession and acquire a specific function, now perfectly inserted in the main story, some of them even change appearance. The viewer can only keep watching as the inextricable puzzle recombines in a perfectly sensible story. By the end of the movie, the viewer already has all the answers he needs and the few questions that remain open only pertain to the strange play the women watched in the theater. This movie's story is simply put, pure genius.

David Lynch's direction has always been wonderful since Eraserhead, his first movie, now cult. Lynch is many things, but has always been a surrealist first and as the years went by, one "absurd" movie after the other, he sharpened his talent until it became a razor blade. Whatever he shoots, normal or surreal scenes, the interest of the viewer is kept alive not just by the strange, thought-provoking story but also by Lynch's masterful direction.

The soundtrack is good and often as gripping as anything else in the movie. A couple of times it's focused on, with great results.

Special effects are irrelevant and mostly absent, except for some smoke and light effects that are used with results better than any of the FX-heavy crap Hollywood usually puts out.

Personally, I regard this movie as one of the great masterpieces of cinema and the most original I've ever seen.

Pi Greco: Il teorema del delirio - Pi

Pi

Can the human mind contain the name of God?

This is the first movie by Darren Aronofsky -- of Requiem for a dream fame -- and the first thing I thought after watching it was, simply: "well, that wasn't bad at all!". Although it doesn't deal seriously with technology, religion, math and chaos theory -- all of them present in the movie but having only cosmetic value -- Pi is a great excercise of direction and style and carries the print of Aronofsky's talent.

The story is about Maximilian Cohen, a mathematician who, using a computer, chaos theory and a lot of math, studies the stock exchange trying to identify a trend that would let him predict the stock prices. Max is extremely intelligent but also very disturbed. He's almost certainly a sociopath and maybe suffers from schizophrenia, too; he can't bear being touched by other people, suffers from extreme paranoia and now and then has violent attacks: he hallucinates and eventually loses consciousness, waking up anguished and exhausted. His research suddenly produces unexpected results and the movie takes off from there in a crescendo of violence and delirium.

All of the characters are mostly static -- except maybe Max, because of the effects of his ailments -- but they are quite interesting. Some of them represent religious fundamentalism, others the enormous economic interests sparked by Max's research and finally Max and his old teacher represent science, holding a neutral ground but being contended for. Keeping that in mind, please notice how Aronofsky tries to send a message with the ending he chose; not a very deep one, I'm afraid, but still deep enough to be interesting and worth thinking about.

Whoever saw Requiem for a dream will be happy to find in Pi some of the characteristic traits of Aronofsky's direction, albeit still in embryonic form. The combination of modern directing technique and black and white film gives Pi and similar movies a certain special appeal and watching it the viewer will probably get the distinct feeling he's watching something unique. This movie isn't anything exceptional, but it does stand out; the direction makes the difference and that's why I consider it a must-see.

Complimenti!

Audio - 8/10

Fortemente consigliato!

Note: this is the review I posted a lot of time ago on anidb.info, so it does follow anidb's conventions.

Overview

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni -- from now on just Higu because I`m terribly lazy -- can`t really be categorized but I guess it can be called a detective story with a supernatural twist. It is divided in 7 short stories, sometimes related, sometimes conflicting, a couple of them a little heavier on the supernatural part and the others almost completely free from it, although things can never be completely explained without adding some kind of ghost -- which never manifests itself clearly -- to the cast of characters. It is a creepy show that always manages to shock the viewer or, at the very least, to make him feel very uneasy.

I won`t give any 10 to this show but I`d like to make something clear: I don`t think that many shows have ever come close to this level of complexity in their story and it`s very rare to see this amount of depth in the way characters are built (GITS comes to mind). Let me say that I personally loved almost every minute of this show, especially the way it progressed into something more and more creepy, dementia rising high then falling, then rising again, keeping me always guessing as to what was coming next and how far the characters could -- and would -- fall. I felt that most of the stories were something special and shows like this one are the reason why I still keep watching anime. It isn`t always great but it certainly never disappoints and the best parts are amazing.

Animation - 6.5/10

There`s really nothing wrong in Higu`s animation, most backgrounds are very nice and the character design is quite good. Most of the characters are loli, so expect big heads on small bodies; this does not really detract anything from anything and makes the quiet parts of the show quite cute and funny. When the characters are overcome by dementia, a death wish or the will to murder, the expressions on their faces are drawn very nicely and convey their feelings in a direct, extreme way although of course consistency suffers from this sudden changes. The continuous alternation between very bright days and very dark nights or rooms seems to follow a scheme that accompanies the rising and falling of the mood of the anime. While it seems obvious and unimaginative that dark tones should dominate the creepy parts of the show, this anime manages to keep a perfect balance between light and darkness in such a way that the animation and the story are always progressing together.

In conclusion, while the animation of this show is certainly nothing like Ergo Proxy or FF7:AC -- indeed the budget must have been relatively low -- it really accomplishes a lot using very little. Kudos!

Sound - 8/10

The show forces the viewer to focus so much on the characters that the music is rarely noticed at all. While the OP and ED are nice, the rest of the show seems to unfold in complete silence and the soundtrack is hardly noticed at all. I don`t personally judge this characteristic as a negative aspect, indeed it means that whoever chose the soundtrack did a very good job. It doesn`t compare, however, to those anime that deliver great music fans usually hum for months after having watched the show.

Now, I don`t know who the voice actors are although I`ve been told they are veterans. Anyway, I cannot stress enough how much they TOTALLY OWN. The voices of the characters dominate this anime completely; OP to ED, first ep to last ep, the voices are the one thing any viewer will remember for sure. Given the ever-changing nature of this show, the mood of which goes up and down countless times like so many waves, it makes sense that the voices must also match that movement. In this regard, the voice actors deliver a flawless performance conveying the feelings of the characters in a very powerful way, wether they have to talk softly, weep, or scream at the top of their lungs. Madness plays a huge role in this anime and the voice actors really manage to express that madness in a very convincing way.

The sound effects are above average, being particularly good during the creepy parts of the show.

Story - 9/10

The story is the strongest element of this show. Usually the adaptation of original, non-anime material -- like games or novels -- that sports many different and conflicting storylines to a single anime is about collapsing all the different stories into a single one, a process that can lead to disappointments like Fate/Stay Night. While Higu suffers from the one problem characteristic of those kind of adaptations, namely an overabundance of female characters, its producers have been smarter and have kept the different storylines, deciding to show them one after the other.
This choice shaped Higu into a very interesting show that asks a lot from the spectator, who has to "reset" his brain after every storyline while trying to pick up the shared elements, but also has a lot to give.

It is noteworthy that most of the genre`s conventions are turned upside down, which is what makes its categorization difficult.
First of all there isn`t a single detective with a helper, instead all of the characters do their own investigation. Just to give one example, this enabled the creators to show the same story twice, each time from a different character and each having its own investigation. This makes the show very, very enjoyable.

Secondly, there are some "supernatural things" going on, but we never quite understand exactly what. Instead of making the mistake of explaining exactly what`s up with all the weird stuff and set rules by which the ghost -- or whatever -- acts, like many other shows do, in Higu the mystery is actual mystery. The viewer keeps trying to guess all the time and eventually comes up with an idea of what`s happening, but he can`t be sure so he keeps trying to guess. It`s very important for any kind of show to keep the viewer interested and his brain active and in this regard Higu is an outstanding success.

Finally, most characters are kids. If you think this is just the same as those other anime where a 14 year old saves the world, think again; the young age of Higu`s characters guarantees the immorality of their actions, not unlike what happens in Narutaru, while it also makes them so much more frail - more then once their minds kind of snap and in this anime when a character snaps, he snaps HARD.

All in all, this show is quite unique and if you like complex stories you`ll definitely be interested. Be warned, though - at times it`s very violent.

Character - 9/10

All of the main characters are very well built and occasionally develop nicely into a crazy version of their former selves. If there`s one thing Higu`s creators are good at besides writing great storylines, that`s detailing a character`s personal descent into hell. Far from using cheap cliches or rushing the development to get to the creepy part where you get to see how much they "lost it", every change in the character`s personality is justified by what happens to him or her and their responses to those events are quite natural, although of course some of them already had something weird about them ready to develop into paranoia, the will to murder or stark terror - or all of those together.

The supporting characters are very good too although of course they get less screentime and no development. Some of them have different personalities in different stories and they all serve a particular purpose - mostly their actions put a lot of pressure on the main characters, pushing them in certain directions.

While most will watch the show trying to understand who`s the bad guy, if there`s a ghost or not, mainly what`s up with all the weird stuff, they will fail miserably because the point of the show is to stress the relationships between characters and what kind of friendship they share - is it interested, selfless, loving? If it breaks, why did it break? If it becomes stronger, why? That`s the kind of questions Higu expects its viewers to ask themselves, as it is made clear during the last short story; and in the meantime it will keep unfolding short, entertaining storylines that keep the viewers in a perpetual state of confusion and wonder and occasionally creep them out.

This is probably the second strongest aspect of the show and one of its biggest accomplishments.

Value - 8/10

I don`t think any viewer will resist watching this show at least a second time; as links between different stories come up, the spectator makes huge efforts to remember details from previous stories that seemed mostly unimportant but suddenly have become interesting. Let`s not forget about the torture scenes, too! Who doesn`t love seeing loli characters being tortured? :D For this reasons I`m rating the value very high.

Enjoyment - 8/10

Great show, very entertaining and very rewarding.

Pale Cocoon

Pale Cocoon

Un gioiello tranquillamente paragonabile a Hoshi no Koe.

Animazione - 9

Overwiev

Pale Cocoon is the work of a single person, Yoshiura Yasuhiro; in just 22 minutes this short anime surprises for its graphical beauty, the intelligent story and the way it's told. A real jewel comparable to Hoshi no Koe.

Pale Cocoon is a sci-fi short tale about a colony of humans buried deep underground, the people unable to go back to the surface because it's been poisoned by the extreme pollution.

Animation - 9/10

Ingenious and original, Pale Cocoon's direction keeps the spectator in a continuous state of mind that goes from confusion to uncertainty. The director keeps confusing the chronological order of some events but leaves the order of the others untouched. By the end of the anime, everything snaps back in its proper place and one has to mentally bow to the ability of Yoshiura — I hope that's the surname, I can't tell — because putting all the pieces back together somehow takes no effort at all. It just happens.

Fully 3D ecept for the characters, the animation creates a beautiful frame within which the story unfolds. The dark atmosphere of a decaying artificial structure is expressed in every single shot especially thanks to the choice of the colors: the pale light of the monitors reflected weakly by opaque metal surfaces and a mildly unpleasant yellowish light pervading the whole environment contrast against a few touches of lively colors added to the scene by a photograph of a world long gone.

Sound - 7.5/10

Except for a good piano piece and a certain song that is important for the plot, there isn't much worth noting; remember, it's only 22 minutes long. The few tracks are tailored to suit the atmosphere and a few moments of silence placed in the right places have an even stronger effect. The one song there is has a huge importance in this anime and is, unsurprisingly, central to the soundtrack as well. Unfortunately, it's just your average J-pop piece hardly worth listening to. An argument exists, however, in favor of it being exactly what it is, a pop song easy to listen to, because of the role it has in Pale Cocoon's fictional universe.

Story - 9/10

Ladies and gentlemen, here's some genuine, honest to God science fiction. This isn't a billion dollars movie straight from Hollywood with tons of special effects where the most intelligent thing they say is "Launch the photon missiles!". This is authentic sci-fi, the one Ray Bradbury and Asimov are famous for.

Don't expect me to hint to Pale Cocoon story, it's so short any hint would be a spoiler. You got all I'm going to give in the overview section.

The setting is a futuristic labyrinth of pipes, metal, monitors, light signals, stairs, lifts; in this almost completely abandoned labyrinth a few people move about with a dwindling sense of purpose. Their job is to find and restore documents like photos and movies. I won't say anything else.

The story is original and sends a message, although the message is nothing new; still, it's there for whoever is interested.

Short stories like this are usually very linear, but as I said the creator managed to break that linearity with exceptional ability.

Readers of the beautiful short stories by Bradbury and similar artists should really give this anime a go.

Characters - —

22 minutes means no character development at all. There's an attempt to do some of that, but it's only an inkling. There wasn't time for it and, honestly, it's all right.

Personal appreciation - 9.5/10

Even though it's short, Pale Cocoon grew on me even as I was watching it. I love it.

Overall - 8.5

I can compare this anime only to Hoshi no Koe and both deserve a rating around 9. I decided for 9.5 for Hoshi and 8.5 for Cocoon because Hoshi no Koe has a much higher chance to make the viewer feel emotionally involved. Both are works of the highest level.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu

Voto complessivo - 9

Originalissimo, ben realizzato, ottimo livello tecnico, ottima storia, personaggi memorabili. Guardatelo e capirete!

Overview

The world is in danger! Quickly, someone, anyone, please amuse Haruhi before it's too late!

The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is one of the most original things I've seen so far and deserves being watched just for that. However it's also an amusing comedy, a parody of many other anime and has some of the most amusing and likable characters ever.

Animation - 9.5

Behold in astonishment as this anime totally destroys any other anime of the same period!

The animation is extremely fluid and surprises for a level of detail rarely seen so far. The movements of the characters appear much more natural and realistic thanks to that fluidity, while the amount of detail and the fact that everything — and I mean everything — is animated, foreground and background, adds to the vividness and overall beauty of every scene.

The character design is maybe the best part of this anime. The facial expressions of the characters are incredibly effective and striking, I'll never forget the malice Haruhi expresses when she teases Mikuru or does some other mischief. In this anime the characters vary a lot and the enormous differences between them are expressed by their animation as effectively as by their dubbers' voices and the lines they speak. In this regard, the studio's work has been absolutely excellent.

During the anime there are many hugely expensive scenes. I hope animation history will be marked by the animated performance of a band playing two songs we get to see during the show. The accuracy of the movements of musicians is incredible, real ones would move exactly that way, and the synchrony with the music is perfectly accurate as well.

Sound - 8

The soundtrack is outstanding, full of likable tracks and as varied as the anime itself. It's used so effectively, it actually seems better then it actually is.

Story - 9

Most people would think Haruhi Suzumiya certainly seems eccentric but not strange enough to be considered dangerous; only a few people know that the very fabric of reality can be torn apart...

...if Haruhi becomes bored. Yes, Haruhi's melancholy is a huge problem.

The most obvious thing is that the story isn't presented normally, indeed the episodes have been aired in the wrong order (on purpose). The actual order is 2, 3, 5, 10, 13, 14, 4, 7, 6, 8, 1, 12, 11, 9, don't watch them in this order the first time through. Yes, the first episode actually comes very late.

This doesn't mean one has to put a huge effort into understanding what the hell is happening, the order is only apparently random; first of all, by the end of the first watch the viewer has understood everything with almost no effort at all, so don't worry. Second, the order is such that Haruhi's complex character is revealed gradually, while the chronological order would scatter her development all over the place.

The setting is the typical Japanese high school we've already seen thousands of times. Thankfully, the characters are so amusing and things so absurd happen that the setting becomes simply irrelevant. Or, maybe, the boring setting was chosen to make the originality of everything else stand out more. Who knows?

The plot is outstanding. It's one of those shows that make you go: "how they hell did they think about that??" Even the contents are very uncommon, I can understand focusing on a niche like Hikaru no Go does, but in Haruhi there's even an explanation of the anthropic principle!

Characters - 8

Well, here's the most absurd collection of characters you can imagine. There aren't two alike and the protagonist, Haruhi, is one of the most interesting characters I've ever had the pleasure of seeing so far. In the beginning she's almost impossible to connect with, but as the show progresses it becomes easier and easier to understand her. It's probably partly thanks to this effort the viewer has to make that in the end she becomes so likable and it's a fact that now she has many "followers" among the anime-watching crowd. A lot of people now love her and I must confess that I'm one of them, so this review may not be that objective (what can I say, I'm only human). It is an objective truth, however, that she and the other characters are very well constructed and evolve interestingly, although maybe not in an unforseeable way. This anime is a great comedy and the characters are its beating heart.

Personal appreciation - 9.5

In 3-4 episodes Haruhi became one of my favorite characters and by the end she was already one of those I love. I liked this anime for a lot of reasons, but Haruhi's character is what made me love it.

Overall - 9

Very original, very well made, high technical level, great story, memorable characters. This anime has it all.

xxxHOLiC: A Midsummer Night's Dream

xxxHOLIC

In generale

A.P. - 9 / 10

Mi sono divertito un sacco. Che altro dire?

Voto Complessivo - 7.5 / 10

Overview

Easy to like and original, xxxHOLiC brings a breath of fresh air to the horror genre. The queerness of the characters, especially the protagonist, turns it at times in a very funny and enjoyable comedy.

Animation - 9 / 10

xxxHOLiC is yet another high-budget anime movie with a fluid and pleasant animation. 3D and 2D are integrated together almost seamlessly. What xxxHOLiC's animation does best is support both the comedy and the horror parts of the anime.

CLAMP's character design is as strange as ever: thin, tall figures with long arms and legs contribute to the general "WTF???" effect and their movements are such that their queerness are accentuated.

Sound - 7.5 / 10

I didn't really notice the soundtrack as I was watching the anime so it probably did its job: support everything without stealing the viewer's attention from what really matters. Too bad there aren't any memorable songs one can listen to.

Like in most recent anime, xxxHOLiC's sound effects are excellent.

Story - 8 / 10

The story is strange and may require a rewatch. The authors went for originality and hit the target, melting new ideas and old cliches together. You can expect something seriously f*cked up.

The setting varies from the typical Tokyo street to a traditional Japanese house and end up in a very strange western-style residence. The gradual switch from common to absurd has been managed quite well and the viewer should feel led by the hand through increasingly strange scenes to end up in a surreal ending where no space seems fixed and the sense of proportion is just a toy the direction plays with.

xxxHOLiC has a comedic heart, so don't expect something like Cossette no Shouzou or Kousetsu Hyaku Monogatari. They don't really belong to the same category.

Characters - 8 / 10

Some typical characters of the horror/supernatural genre play important parts in xxxHOLiC. The all-knowing witch, the guy cursed with the ability to see spirits, the other guy who can't see them but repels them just by being there; finally, the typical idiotic Japanese mascotte, which almost nobody could identify as a rabbit without having undergone some serious anime indoctrination. All of them remain mostly faithful to the cliche they embody but still deviate from it now and then in ways I found interesting and amusing. Indeed, as I was watching the anime I never found it unoriginal, quite the contrary; so, whatever the reason, the characters do work very well.

Personal Judgment - 9 / 10

Lotsa fun :) Wheeee!!

Overall - 7.5 / 10

Far from being a must-see or even memorable, xxxHOLiC nevertheless has its merits and can be an hour or so of solid fun, so I recommend it.

Visions of Escaflowne - movie

Escaflowne - Il film

Overview

One of the most underrated anime ever, this movie realizes a complete rewrite of the Escaflowne TV series' original story doing away with many elements and reorganizing others giving them new meanings. I'll go out on a limb now and claim that this is a must-see for anyone who has watched the series.

Before going on with the actual review, I'd like to talk a little about this movie and why it's been met with so much negative criticism from both old fans and newcomers. First of all, it's important to explain what this movie is not.

This is not one of those ugly summaries that now and them production houses make. It isn't even a rework of the series the objective of which is to summarize the story eliminating fillers and other superfluous parts so that it can fit into a one hour and a half time span. It simply doesn't have that kind of objective. It isn't a parallel story or something covering events that happened while the main story unfolded. It doesn't have the objective of making Escaflowne any better than it already was. It doesn't have anything to do with the portentous fusion of shoujo and shounen that set the original series apart from almost anything else ever made before or since. It doesn't keep intact the original setting, except a few central elements like Gaea being a hidden planet in orbit around or near planet Earth. It doesn't keep the original characters intact, they have the same name and almost the same appearance but are very different persons. The story is very different from the original one and while the beginning is in a few ways similar to the beginning of the series, the story unfolds and ends very differently.

Now that I did away with the wrong expectations you might have had, on to what this movie actually is and does.

It takes some elements from the original series and insert them into a brand new context, indeed it's important to have watched the original series and be familiar with all those elements to appreciate it. This simply isn't a movie newcomers can watch. Newcomers cannot possibly appreciate the good parts of this movie. Period.

It's a noteworthy product that shows a creativity rarely seen so far. It's clearly an attempt to present an alternative, a more adult version of the same story. It's an extremely bold experiment that twists the characters' nature so much, old fans hated it. It perverted their idea of the characters, the setting and the story. It did violence to whatever they had liked in Escaflowne. However, a movie must stand out on his own rather then appeal to the fans of whatever came before it. There's no real reason why such a thing shouldn't have been done and fans only have themselves to blame for expecting more of the same.

Now, it's absolutely true that this movie is full of holes and defects. The experiment was too bold and the limitations, especially the length, too tight to allow for complete success. My point is, however, that while it does deserve quite a lot of negative criticism, it also holds a lot of beauty that deserves praise. It's a mixed bag and I'll try my hardest to do justice to all of it.

Animation - 9.5/10

Completely different from the series and leaps and bounds better (we're talking 2000 here, the series is from 1996), the animation and artwork are spellbinding. A few examples: the character design underwent a complete re-elaboration; the moon now shows a huge eye looking down at Gaea; the cities are way different and so are the flying machines; everything appears more mature, reaching an artistic level that by any reasonable standard can only be judged way higher then anything the old series had to show. The animation itself is a lot more fluid than the original series' one.

Since in this new setting the "big armors", replacing mechas in Escalowne's world, are extremely rare — exactly two in the whole world — BONES and Sunrise — the production studios responsible for this movie — made the very good decision to change them completely. Their movements and the effects on the surroundings are carefully studied to fully express the ideas of a huge weight and an exceptional strength and while in the original series the armors already had an imposing presence and managed very well to communicate to the viewer their strength, in this movie the whole thing is brought up to an absolutely spectacular level. Words fail to express how scary those huge contraptions are.

The action scenes are plentiful and completely devoid of any kind of repetition; the quieter scenes are very pleasant to the eye and whenever they include any kind landscape they are stunningly beautiful.

Sound - 10/10

Yoko Kanno gave her all. There's not much to say about something when the idea that it could have been better is ridiculous. Yoko Kanno is a great artist and during this movie her music shines.

The Japanese dubbers are perfect too, unsurprisingly. It's Sunrise we're talking about.

Storia - 6.5/10

In this extremely dark version of Escaflowne, Hitomi lost any will to live. Incapable of giving her life any kind of meaning and equally incapable to end it, she lives as if sleeping until Folken appears to her and calls her to Gaea. In a scene of pure surrealism so well done that by itself it's enough to recommend the whole movie, Hitomi disappears from Earth and finds heself inside Escaflowne only moments before Van conquers and opens it. The story begins.

This new story is much shorter. There's a war going on, which isn't the war we know from the original series, and both of the forces fighting each other are on the verge of obtaining the ultimate weapon, Escaflowne. Hitomi arrives while one of the forces, the one Van is fighting for, is stealing Escaflowne from the other. She plays her part and goes back to Earth. Nothing original, the plot is typical of the genre and the story, like the original series, is mainly a frame while the actual focus is on the characters.

Like most other movies based on previous series, this one also promises a lot and delivers little, e.g. the setting is enormous, but we only see a tiny part of it. Nevertheless, a careful eye can see the movie says a lot more than what it seems. The key is to keep one's mind sharp and dissect every detail and every sentence with it, because the action scenes are many and the space reserved for the narration is little. A review is not the right place for an extensive treatise of the most hidden meanings of a movie, so I can only warn the reader (for the umpteenth time): pay attention.

It's also true that many questions remain open after the ending, especially those about what Hitomi had to do with the story. She appears as a girl taken from Earth and dumped on Gaea for no good reason, just to provide a neck around which someone could put a pendant (which, again, is not the same as the pendant of the original series). This is certainly a great defect but it exists only because the movie is too short and what happens really couldn't have happened without her; the problem is that it just isn't made clear enough why.

One last horrible thing is the way two cliches have been made part of the ending. Two cliches one could expect from Hollywood, but not from BONES and Sunrise. When I saw them I became angry. Very angry.

Characters - 6/10

The traits that distinguished the characters in the old series are now much more extreme. Hitomi's inability to find a path to follow now bears feelings of anguish and regret that almost lead her to suicide. Van's thirst for revenge has turned into a blind thirst for blood and has led him to lose his path as well. Folken's will to lead Gaea to destruction is now central to whatever he does. The feelings of all the characters are all painted in the dark hues of violence against the world or violence against themselves, or both. Folken is now the felon, the evil character with no redeeming qualities. Van is a merciless killer, his gentle self long buried. Hitomi goes as far as writing goodbye letters to her closest friend, waiting for the chance to disappear.

The objective of the old series was to show Van and Hitomi getting closer and closer while Van's pure soul surfaces and Hitomi goes through the coming of age, finding her purpose in life (a commont heme in anime series). This is the one thing the movie tried to keep, even making it central to the unfolding of the story; sadly, the progression happens in quick bursts distant from each other rather then gradually and appears unnatural. This is very sad indeed, because the link between the story and the characters' development is apparent as it is and would have been much more beautiful had such development been gradual: self destruction and the destruction of Gaea are one and the same and to save Gaea one must first and foremost save herself.

Personal judgment - 8/10

I think this is a wonderful movie giving a new interpretation of a beautiful series. I acknowledge its shortfalls but I also think nobody could have done any better within those limits. This movie gave me both satisfaction and delusions but the positive attitude I usually have toward this kind of things lets me appreciate the whole experience as a very good one.

Overall - 6/10

First of all, if you haven't watched the series just don't watch this unless you're interested in the animation. You like Yoko Kanno? Good, download the OST or something.

I can't even promise something to those who saw the 1996 series, this movie certainly has enough shortfalls to be unsatisfying and even ugly for a lot of people, while others like me will appreciate it. It's a mixed bag and can only have mixed results depending on who watches it.

Tenkuu no Escaflowne

Escaflowne

Terms you might not know and probably need to

Target audience

Shoujo: appeals to females. Usually has at least one love triangle and many of the male characters are drawn as woman-like as possible and idealized. Most shoujo are very cheesy and shallow.

Shounen: appeals to males. Usually full of fighting, rants a lot about power and the reasons the characters have to fight. Most shounen progress a fight at a time, each being more difficult then the former, the main characters having to face stronger and stronger enemies, and usually falls apart way before the ending due to an overuse of cliches and too much repetition because of the simple pattern it follows. Usually very cheesy and shallow :)

Genre

Mecha: huge robots. Escaflowne's version of the genre is an abundance of huge mechanical armors.

Fantasy: well, you do know about this one for sure. Lord of the Rings and all that stuff. Escaflowne has a typical medieval fantasy setting.

Overview

Mostly set on planet Gaea, orbiting the Earth but hidden from it, Escaflowne is an entertaining fantasy with some elements taken from the mecha genre. It explores a few themes common to many anime, like finding one's path in life and the coming of age, inserting them in an entirely original context and bends two styles, shounen and shoujo, to create something new and unexpected.

Animation - 9/10

While a few elements, like the dragon in the first episode, are overly detailed and fail to blend into the rest of the animation — that was detail for the sake of detail and a pitiful attempt to put some wow factor into the beginning of the anime and hook more people, to be sure — and while the character design admittedly has a few problematic features — like long noses a lot of viewers found annoying and ugly — Escaflowne's animation (by BONES) is overall very consistent, technically great and is set apart from other anime by an original style.

It's true that now it looks dated, but Escaflowne has one of the most beautiful animations of its time (1996). A quick search will show that of the major anime released in that period only Ghost in the Shell (1995), a movie, was superior and I don't think there's a series with an animation of the same level. Escaflowne is one of the last visually beautiful anime made before 3D elements really started to be [over]used, therefore I judge BONES's work a milestone in anime history.

Sound - 8/10

The soundtrack is very good overall, perfectly suited to the fantasy genre; unfortunately, near the end of the series the choirs singing "escaflowne, escaflowne" all the time are tiring and boring. The Japanese dubbers did a good job, nothing exceptional except maybe Marle's very good dubbing.

Story - 9/10

Making elements never seen together coexist in the same show, like tarots, mechas and dragons, and blending two opposite genres may seem an obvious attempt to get as many fans as possible but all those elements are inserted in Escaflowne's world so well, the setting never feels unnatural or forced. Moreover, Escaflowne, unlike many of the anime that try to appeal to as many people as possible, is rich with extremes. It's violent and gory like the most gruesome shounen, full of love triangles like the cheesiest shoujo but still doesn't feel as over the top as it should.

The comparison with Ayashi no Ceres seems almost natural; after all, Ayashi did realize, 4 years later (2000), a new fusion between shoujo and shounen. However Ayashi didn't blend two different genres, e.g. fantasy and mecha, like Escaflowne did. Escaflowne's fusion is not just about the target audience, it pervades all of it, the story, the setting and the characters and as far as I know it stands unchallenged in that regard.

Another noteworthy element is the absence of the uber-evil character and the lack of a clear demarcation between good and evil. It may look like there is one during the first half or so, but Escaflowne is deeper enough that claiming its story is yet another good vs evil war would be unfair. Indeed, none of the three possible candidates ends up filling the role of The Evil One. Evil comes from everyone and nobody, it's in the relationships between characters and in the conflicts between the futures they try to bring about.

Finally, the rhythm is praiseworthy: Escaflowne is never too fast nor too slow, useless episodes are only a couple or so and there are no fillers.

Characters - main 9/10, cast 7/10, 7.5/10 overall

The first rating is about the main characters, the second is about the rest of the cast. 7.5 is the overall judgment.

Van and Hitomi are nothing like anything you may have seen in other shows — although in the beginning they do look like they're going to be cliches of the two main genres — and undergo a big and interesting development.

The rest of the cast is mostly static and almost uninteresting. Except maybe for Marle — a vary funny character although she shouts "Van-sama!!" too many times — the cast is made of useless characters like Dryden and Millerna or underdeveloped and unoriginal like Folken and Allen. Dilandau is a very interesting one, probably one of the best madmen I've seen so far, but he gets smuggled out of the main story for no good reason.

Personal judgment - 9.5/10

The second time I watched Escaflowe I liked it even more than the first. It's one of those anime I loved most, although I'm not as crazy about it as I am about Ghost in the Shell, Millennium Actress, the first Macross and a few others.

Overall - 8.5/10

While many of the characters are nothing to write home about, the anime is overall a big accomplishment. Sunrise and BONES are a great "couple" and probably made more quality anime then anybody else.
