Visions of Escaflowne - movie

Uno degli esperimenti più sottovalutati della storia degli anime, questo film realizza una riscrittura completa della serie televisiva eliminando molti elementi e riorganizzandone altri in modo da dar loro nuovi significati. Un must per chiunque abbia visto la serie.


Prima di passare alla review vera e propria, vorrei parlare un pò del film in generale e del perchè è stato accolto così male dai fan. Innanzitutto è necessario sottolineare cosa questo film non è.

Questo non è uno di quei bruttissimi riassunti che di tanto in tanto vengono fatti. Non è una rielaborazione della storia della serie che abbia come obiettivo sintetizzare la storia eliminando le parti superflue in modo da farla entrare nello spazio di un'ora e mezzo. Non è una storia parallela a quella della serie. Non ha come obiettivo il miglioramento della storia della serie. Questo film non ha niente a che vedere con la fusione di shoujo e shounen che è forse uno dei tratti piu' eccezionali della serie televisiva. Non mantiene quasi niente dell'ambientazione originale, eccetto alcuni elementi. Non conserva quasi niente dei personaggi della serie, molti dei quali appaiono come persone completamente diverse. La storia è sensibilmente diversa da quella della serie e per quanto l'inizio sia rimasto per alcuni versi (pochi) invariato, lo svolgimento ed il finale sono del tutto nuovi.

Questo film prende alcuni elementi dalla serie e li inserisce in un contesto del tutto nuovo, infatti è importante aver visto la serie in modo da avere familiarità con tali elementi e poter apprezzare l'abilità con la quale sono stati utilizzati. Questo film è un lavoro notevole che dimostra una creatività molto rara; è chiaramente il tentativo di presentare una visione alternativa, piu' adulta, della stessa storia. Questo esperimento estremamente coraggioso è stato giudicato in modi estremamente negativi dai fan della serie perchè stravolge completamente la loro idea dei personaggi, dell'ambientazione e della storia, ma resta qualcosa di quasi unico nella sua originalità e per la maggior parte è molto ben fatto. Peccato per alcuni cliché usati nel finale, che rovinano molto e avrebbero potuto essere evitati piuttosto facilmente; in ogni caso pur non essendo l'anime migliore che sia mai stato fatto, la maggior parte delle recensioni che girano per internet non gli fanno giustizia.


Animazione - 9/10

L'animazione è completamente diversa da quella della serie ed enormemente migliore (d'altra parte il film è del 2000, la serie del 1996). Alcuni esempi degni di nota: il disegno dei personaggi è stato completamente rielaborato; la luna adesso mostra un occhio fisso su Gaea; le città sono molto diverse, così come i mezzi volanti. Il tutto appare molto più maturo e sinceramente raggiunge un livello artistico molto superiore, da qualunque punto di vista lo si voglia guardare. Inutile dirlo, le animazioni sono, come sempre, molto piu' fluide in questo film che in qualsiasi serie del tempo (e molte delle più moderne).

Dato che in questa nuova ambientazione le "armaturone" (che nel mondo di Escaflowne rimpiazzano i "robottoni" ;)) sono qualcosa di estremamente raro (in tutto il film ce ne sono esattamente due), BONES e Sunrise hanno pensato bene di cambiarle quasi completamente. I loro movimenti e gli effetti che causano sull'ambiente intorno sono attentamente studiati per esprimere l'idea di un peso enorme e di una forza immane e per quanto anche nella serie originale le armature fossero decisamente imponenti e riuscissero bene a comunicare allo spettatore quella loro imponenza, in questo film il tutto è portato a livelli assolutamente spettacolari.

Le scene d'azione sono molte e non mostrano alcuna ripetitività; le scene più tranquille sono molto piacevoli e quando includono un qualche paesaggio di Gaea diventano letteralmente eccezionali.


Suono - 10/10

Yoko Kanno ha dato veramente il massimo. Non c'è molto da dire su una cosa quando quella cosa è perfetta. Sinceramente, l'idea che la colonna sonora avrebbe potuto essere migliore è ridicola. Bravissimi anche i doppiatori - gran parte delle voci sono davvero belle e perfettamente adatte ai personaggi.


Storia - 6.5/10

Se non fosse per alcuni grossi problemi col finale, questo film sarebbe stato molto, molto bello. Detto questo...

Hitomi in questa versione estremamente oscura di Escaflowne ha perso completamente la voglia di vivere. Incapace di dare una direzione alla propria vita ed ugualmente incapace di porle fine, vive dormendo, sognando di scomparire; finchè Folken le appare e la chiama su Gaea. In una scena di puro surrealismo molto ben fatta, Hitomi scompare dalla Terra e si ritrova dentro Escaflowne. La storia ha inizio.

Stavolta, la storia è (ovviamente) molto più breve. C'è una guerra in corso (che non è la guerra che conosciamo dalla serie, ma qualcosa di completamente diverso) ed entrambi i due fronti stanno per ottenere l'arma finale. Hitomi arriva mentre uno dei due fronti ruba l'arma all'altro, poco prima dello scontro finale, svolge il suo ruolo e torna sulla Terra. Niente di incredibilmente originale, quindi. Lo schema è quello tipico del genere e la storia è focalizzata interamente sui personaggi.

Come tutti i film basati su serie, anche questo sembra promettere tantissimo per poi realizzare poco; ad esempio l'ambientazione è chiaramente enorme, ma ne vediamo solo una minuscola parte. Eppure, osservando con attenzione, il film dice molto più di quanto sembri. La chiave è stare attenti ad ogni particolare ed ogni frase, perchè le scene d'azione sono tante e lo spazio disponibile per la narrazione è poco. Una recensione non è il posto giusto in cui esplorare approfonditamente gli aspetti più nascosti di un film, quindi mi limito ad ammonire i miei lettori: state attenti.

Continuando con la lista dei difetti della storia di questo film, è anche vero che molte domande restano aperte anche dopo il finale, prima fra tutte quella che ogni singolo spettatore deve essersi chiesto: qual'è stato il ruolo di Hitomi in tutto ciò? Ai nostri occhi appare come una ragazzina presa di peso dal pianeta Terra e mollata su Gaea per fornire un collo attorno al quale appendere una collana. Questa è senz'altro una grave mancanza, ma riguarda il personaggio di Hitomi, non la storia. Non solo, aggiungo anche che questo difetto esiste solo perché il film è troppo corto e che in realtà quello che vediamo accadere non sarebbe potuto succedere senza che Hitomi si trovasse lì. Ma ancora una volta devo fermarmi.

Un'ultimo gravissimo errore è il modo in cui alla fine ci vengono sparati in faccia un paio di clichè degni di Hollywood. Non posso entrare nei particolari, ma guardandoli mi sono arrabbiato. Molto. Da Sunrise e BONES non me lo sarei aspettato.


Character - 6/10

I tratti caratteristici dei personaggi del film sono molto più estremi di qualunque cosa venga mostrata nella serie. L'incapacità di Hitomi di trovare una strada nella vita, la sete di vendetta di Van e la volontà di portare Gaea alla distruzione di Folken sono estremamente pronunciate e danno a tutto lo spettacolo toni molto più oscuri e violenti. Stavolta Folken è "il cattivo" e non cerca alcun tipo di redenzione; Van è un assassino spietato che ha sepolto il proprio animo gentile; Hitomi passa il tempo cercando di scomparire e arriva anche a scrivere lettere d'addio all'amica, meditando il suicidio.

Lo scopo della serie Escaflowne era di mostrare Hitomi e Van che si avvicinano sempre più e l'anima pura di Van che esce allo scoperto mentre Hitomi diventa un'adulta; purtroppo nel film questa progressione avviene a scatti, al punto che lo spettatore potrebbe restare un pò confuso. E' un peccato, perchè anche così si nota una relazione fra la progressione della storia e l'evoluzione dei personaggi: la distruzione di se stessi e la distruzione di tutto ciò che ci circonda sono equivalenti e per salvare Gaea è necessario innanzitutto salvare se stessi.


Apprezzamento Personale - 8/10

Bellissimo spettacolo che fornisce una nuova interpretazione su una bella serie. Peccato per le molte mancanze ma sinceramente non credo che qualcun altro avrebbe potuto fare di più. Questo film mi ha regalato molti momenti più che felici e un paio di grosse delusioni alla fine, ma continuo a pensare all'intera esperienza come a qualcosa di molto positivo.


Voto complessivo - 6/10

Non posso consigliare questo film a chi non abbia visto la serie e non prometto niente. Sicuramente le grosse mancanze presenti saranno sufficienti a rovinare l'intero spettacolo per alcune persone, mentre altri apprezzeranno i molti pregi. Un 6 sembra l'unico voto bilanciato per questo strano esperimento.

Overview

One of the most underrated anime ever, this movie realizes a complete rewrite of the Escaflowne TV series' original story doing away with many elements and reorganizing others giving them new meanings. I'll go out on a limb now and claim that this is a must-see for anyone who has watched the series.

Before going on with the actual review, I'd like to talk a little about this movie and why it's been met with so much negative criticism from both old fans and newcomers. First of all, it's important to explain what this movie is not.

This is not one of those ugly summaries that now and them production houses make. It isn't even a rework of the series the objective of which is to summarize the story eliminating fillers and other superfluous parts so that it can fit into a one hour and a half time span. It simply doesn't have that kind of objective. It isn't a parallel story or something covering events that happened while the main story unfolded. It doesn't have the objective of making Escaflowne any better than it already was. It doesn't have anything to do with the portentous fusion of shoujo and shounen that set the original series apart from almost anything else ever made before or since. It doesn't keep intact the original setting, except a few central elements like Gaea being a hidden planet in orbit around or near planet Earth. It doesn't keep the original characters intact, they have the same name and almost the same appearance but are very different persons. The story is very different from the original one and while the beginning is in a few ways similar to the beginning of the series, the story unfolds and ends very differently.

Now that I did away with the wrong expectations you might have had, on to what this movie actually is and does.

It takes some elements from the original series and insert them into a brand new context, indeed it's important to have watched the original series and be familiar with all those elements to appreciate it. This simply isn't a movie newcomers can watch. Newcomers cannot possibly appreciate the good parts of this movie. Period.

It's a noteworthy product that shows a creativity rarely seen so far. It's clearly an attempt to present an alternative, a more adult version of the same story. It's an extremely bold experiment that twists the characters' nature so much, old fans hated it. It perverted their idea of the characters, the setting and the story. It did violence to whatever they had liked in Escaflowne. However, a movie must stand out on his own rather then appeal to the fans of whatever came before it. There's no real reason why such a thing shouldn't have been done and fans only have themselves to blame for expecting more of the same.

Now, it's absolutely true that this movie is full of holes and defects. The experiment was too bold and the limitations, especially the length, too tight to allow for complete success. My point is, however, that while it does deserve quite a lot of negative criticism, it also holds a lot of beauty that deserves praise. It's a mixed bag and I'll try my hardest to do justice to all of it.


Animation - 9.5/10

Completely different from the series and leaps and bounds better (we're talking 2000 here, the series is from 1996), the animation and artwork are spellbinding. A few examples: the character design underwent a complete re-elaboration; the moon now shows a huge eye looking down at Gaea; the cities are way different and so are the flying machines; everything appears more mature, reaching an artistic level that by any reasonable standard can only be judged way higher then anything the old series had to show. The animation itself is a lot more fluid than the original series' one.

Since in this new setting the "big armors", replacing mechas in Escalowne's world, are extremely rare — exactly two in the whole world — BONES and Sunrise — the production studios responsible for this movie — made the very good decision to change them completely. Their movements and the effects on the surroundings are carefully studied to fully express the ideas of a huge weight and an exceptional strength and while in the original series the armors already had an imposing presence and managed very well to communicate to the viewer their strength, in this movie the whole thing is brought up to an absolutely spectacular level. Words fail to express how scary those huge contraptions are.

The action scenes are plentiful and completely devoid of any kind of repetition; the quieter scenes are very pleasant to the eye and whenever they include any kind landscape they are stunningly beautiful.


Sound - 10/10

Yoko Kanno gave her all. There's not much to say about something when the idea that it could have been better is ridiculous. Yoko Kanno is a great artist and during this movie her music shines.

The Japanese dubbers are perfect too, unsurprisingly. It's Sunrise we're talking about.


Storia - 6.5/10

In this extremely dark version of Escaflowne, Hitomi lost any will to live. Incapable of giving her life any kind of meaning and equally incapable to end it, she lives as if sleeping until Folken appears to her and calls her to Gaea. In a scene of pure surrealism so well done that by itself it's enough to recommend the whole movie, Hitomi disappears from Earth and finds heself inside Escaflowne only moments before Van conquers and opens it. The story begins.

This new story is much shorter. There's a war going on, which isn't the war we know from the original series, and both of the forces fighting each other are on the verge of obtaining the ultimate weapon, Escaflowne. Hitomi arrives while one of the forces, the one Van is fighting for, is stealing Escaflowne from the other. She plays her part and goes back to Earth. Nothing original, the plot is typical of the genre and the story, like the original series, is mainly a frame while the actual focus is on the characters.

Like most other movies based on previous series, this one also promises a lot and delivers little, e.g. the setting is enormous, but we only see a tiny part of it. Nevertheless, a careful eye can see the movie says a lot more than what it seems. The key is to keep one's mind sharp and dissect every detail and every sentence with it, because the action scenes are many and the space reserved for the narration is little. A review is not the right place for an extensive treatise of the most hidden meanings of a movie, so I can only warn the reader (for the umpteenth time): pay attention.

It's also true that many questions remain open after the ending, especially those about what Hitomi had to do with the story. She appears as a girl taken from Earth and dumped on Gaea for no good reason, just to provide a neck around which someone could put a pendant (which, again, is not the same as the pendant of the original series). This is certainly a great defect but it exists only because the movie is too short and what happens really couldn't have happened without her; the problem is that it just isn't made clear enough why.

One last horrible thing is the way two cliches have been made part of the ending. Two cliches one could expect from Hollywood, but not from BONES and Sunrise. When I saw them I became angry. Very angry.


Characters - 6/10

The traits that distinguished the characters in the old series are now much more extreme. Hitomi's inability to find a path to follow now bears feelings of anguish and regret that almost lead her to suicide. Van's thirst for revenge has turned into a blind thirst for blood and has led him to lose his path as well. Folken's will to lead Gaea to destruction is now central to whatever he does. The feelings of all the characters are all painted in the dark hues of violence against the world or violence against themselves, or both. Folken is now the felon, the evil character with no redeeming qualities. Van is a merciless killer, his gentle self long buried. Hitomi goes as far as writing goodbye letters to her closest friend, waiting for the chance to disappear.

The objective of the old series was to show Van and Hitomi getting closer and closer while Van's pure soul surfaces and Hitomi goes through the coming of age, finding her purpose in life (a commont heme in anime series). This is the one thing the movie tried to keep, even making it central to the unfolding of the story; sadly, the progression happens in quick bursts distant from each other rather then gradually and appears unnatural. This is very sad indeed, because the link between the story and the characters' development is apparent as it is and would have been much more beautiful had such development been gradual: self destruction and the destruction of Gaea are one and the same and to save Gaea one must first and foremost save herself.


Personal judgment - 8/10

I think this is a wonderful movie giving a new interpretation of a beautiful series. I acknowledge its shortfalls but I also think nobody could have done any better within those limits. This movie gave me both satisfaction and delusions but the positive attitude I usually have toward this kind of things lets me appreciate the whole experience as a very good one.

First of all, if you haven't watched the series just don't watch this unless you're interested in the animation. You like Yoko Kanno? Good, download the OST or something.

I can't even promise something to those who saw the 1996 series, this movie certainly has enough shortfalls to be unsatisfying and even ugly for a lot of people, while others like me will appreciate it. It's a mixed bag and can only have mixed results depending on who watches it.
