Primer

A causa delle particolarità di questo film, sono stato incapace di dare voti. Non solo non so bene neanche io cosa pensare, mi manca anche una pietra di paragone. Chiedo scusa ed auguro buona lettura (e visione!).


Quattro scienziati che lavorano tutti nella stessa compagnia portano avanti assieme un'attività; come sede hanno un garage, posseggono strumenti appropriati e riescono alla meno peggio a procurarsi i materiali dei quali hanno bisogno per costruire poche apparecchiature elettroniche che spediscono direttamente a casa dei pochissimi acquirenti. Accumulano brevetti nell'attesa di incappare nell'invenzione che finalmente attrarrà investimenti sostanziosi, facendoli ricchi.

A causa di uno scontro di opinioni, il gruppo si divide in due coppie, ciascuna coppia impegnata in un diverso progetto. I due protagonisti cercano di costruire un superconduttore che funzioni a temperatura ambiente e finiscono invece per costruire una macchina del tempo.

Quando finalmente si rendono conto di quello che hanno tra le mani, Abe ed Aaron iniziano ad usare la macchina e passa poco tempo prima che certi incidenti accadano e che veri e propri paradossi vengano introdotti nella realtà. Linee temporali diverse si sovrappongono e coesistono per molte ore, a volte giorni, mentre incongruenze sempre più grandi rendono difficile tenere traccia della differenza tra passato e presente; così difficile, infatti, che prima di aver visto metà del film lo spettatore già capisce di aver perso il bandolo della matassa irrimediabilmente.

Filmato per soli 7000 dollari e praticamente privo di effetti speciali ma in compenso estremamente intelligente (magra consolazione in realtà, visto come viene usata quell'intelligenza), Primer è un interessante esperimento che mette alla prova i limiti della cinematografia moderna, o meglio li infrange completamente senza alcun riguardo per il povero spettatore. La struttura della storia è estremamente intricata, al punto che venirne a capo è assolutamente impossibile; eppure riesce ad essere così stimolante che uno spettatore al quale piace il genere non potrà che guardarlo ancora ed ancora, magari saltando da una scena all'altra ma sempre più attento ai particolari - fino all'inevitabile fallimento.

L'amaro rimasto in bocca dopo essersi resi conto che capire il film è al di fuori della propria portata (in realtà basterebbe usare carta e penna, ma chi mai prenderebbe appunti guardando un film?) è secondo me alla base di gran parte delle critiche negative ricevute da Primer (una veloce ricerca con Google vi darà un'idea piuttosto precisa di quanto sia odiato ed amato). Anche chi lo ammira non può certo negare che la maggior parte della pellicola sembra avere il preciso scopo di farci sentire stupidi - un vero e proprio esercizio in cripticità, talmente diabolico da restare sempre fuori dalla nostra portata dandoci al tempo stesso la precisa impressione che un significato c'è; la cosa che fa infuriare ancora di più è che c'è davvero!

Personalmente, preferisco guardare il tutto da un lato più positivo: Primer è un film piacevole, stuzzicante, acuto. Lo stile della regia, che tende il più possibile verso il realismo, accoppiato al tema fantascientifico crea un effetto unico. I personaggi sono vivi, persone reali; scienziati che appaiono alla maggior parte di noi come, per lo meno, persone dotate di intelligenza superiore, ma con tutti i difetti, le illusioni e i desideri delle persone che conosciamo. In questo film non ci sono attori famosi, vediamo soltanto persone comunissime interpretate da attori bravi (uno dei quali, che interpreta Aaron, ovvero Shane Carruth, è anche il regista e scrittore) e l'amicizia fra di loro è uno dei punti focali. E se Primer ci fa sperare in un lungo dialogo o in un miracoloso flashback che gentilmente dipani per noi quella gran matassa confusa che è il suo intreccio per poi invece sbatterci in faccia una spiegazione che è da sola dieci volte più complessa del problema che risolve... pazienza. La comprensione è soltanto la meta; Primer non ci permette di raggiungerla, ma in compenso rende il viaggio estremamente interessante.

Non troverete questo film in italiano - non è mai stato tradotto. Qua però potete trovare un po' di sottotitoli.

Due to the strangeness of this movie, I haven't been able to rate anything at all. I don't know what to think about it, honestly, and I don't think it can be compared to anything else. I apologize.

Four scientists working together in the same company lead a business in a garage. They have all the tools they need and somehow manage to find the materials they need to build a few electronic contraptions they send directly to their customers, who are mostly “wannabe hackers testing their dads' old motherboards”. They keep filing for patents, waiting for the big invention that will attract all the investors and make them rich.

After some infighting, the group splits in two couples, each working on a different project in the same garage. The two protagonists try to build a superconductor that can work at room temperature, but because of a mistake they build a time machine instead.

When they finally realize what they have done, Abe and Aaron start using the machine, travelling back in time to re-live periods of 6 hours or so. Before long, accidents happen; paradoxes are introduced into reality, different timelines merge together in almost nonsensical ways and bigger and bigger inconsistencies make following the story very, very difficult, so difficult that 45 minutes from the beginning the viewer has already lost any idea of what the hell is happening.

Filmed for only 7000$ and almost devoid of special effects but very, very intelligent (too intelligent for its own good), Primer is an interesting experiment that tests the limits of modern cinematography, even those of common sense – actually it goes way beyond those limits, with no regard for the poor audience. The story structure is composed of a jumbled mess of interconnected threads and it's almost impossible to understand how it actually unfolds. However, Primer manages to capture the spectator's interest so strongly, the viewer will probably watch it again and again – if he's a patient viewer, that is, and if he likes the genre – trying to force what he sees into some shape he can understand and, eventually, failing.

The bitter taste left in the viewer's mouth by the realization that the movie is just too difficult to understand (pen and paper would be enough, but who's taking notes while watching a movie?) is in my opinion at the basis of most of the negative criticism Premier received (a quick Google search will give you an idea of how much it's loved and hated). Even its most zealous fans have to admit most of it seems designed for the specific purpose of making us feel stupid – an exercise in crypticism so evil, it stays out of our reach while giving us the distinct feeling that a meaning does exist; indeed it exist, but you'll have to search Wikipedia to find it.

Personally, I'm looking at it with a positive attitude: Primer is a pleasant, bright, sharp movie. It never bored me at all and kept me interested all the time. The direction style, as realistic as possible, coupled with the sci-fi theme creates a unique effect. The characters are very much alive, they feel like real people; they're scientists appearing to most of us like people gifted with superior intelligence but they also have all the defects, illusions and desires of humans. There are no famous actors in this movie, only good actors – one of them, Aaron, actually being director and writer Shane Carruth – and while the time machine is the most interesting and original thing in the movie – it's actually nothing like any other time machine you may have seen in other movies – the characters are played so well that the focus seems to rest more on them and their relationships then on the sci-fi elements.

Primer lets us hope in a long dialogue or a miraculous flashback that explain everything that happened; it does, instead, deliver an explanation that is itself ten times more complex than the problem it solves. That's worth nothing, though, because comprehension is only the end of the trip; Primer doesn't let us reach it, but it makes the trip itself extremely interesting. I can't rate this movie, but I can and do recommend it.
